The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Silver Award recognises employers who have signed the Armed Forces Covenant, employ at least one member of the Armed Forces Community and actively communicate a positive attitude of support for their employees who are members of the Reserve Forces.

Loughborough University, Remploy, who are based in Leicester, and the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) joined eight other employers from around the East Midlands at the awards event.

The award presentation, which took place on Thursday 10 November at Burleigh Court Hotel in Loughborough, saw award recipients each be presented a certificate for demonstrating their commitment to the Ministry of Defence (MOD).

Rob Allan, HR Director, at Loughborough University, attended the event. He said:

“Loughborough University is delighted to achieve this recognition for part of our wide range of involvement with the Armed Forces and we look forward to building further on this in the future.”

Gareth Parry, Remploy Chief Executive, said his organisation was delighted to be recognised:

“We greatly value the contribution made to this country by service personnel and we are honoured to support them into sustainable employment after they leave the Armed Forces.

“Support to the Armed Forces community in Remploy starts at board level and continues throughout the company in every department and team. We actively look to recruit service leavers and veterans and encourage colleagues to look at reservist or cadet volunteer careers.”

Alyson Hunter, Director of HR and Volunteering at the RAFA, said:

“Supporting our Armed Forces community and all they do is a privilege. To recognise the commitment of our employees we have granted additional leave and flexibility to enable them to meet their training commitments. We are delighted to be recognised in this way and encourage other employers to consider this scheme.”

John Wilson, the MOD’s Regional Employer Engagement Director for the East Midlands, said:

“It is important to recognise and reward employers who have shown both support and commitment to their reservist employees and the other members of the Armed Forces Community they employ.

“Demonstrating flexibility towards the training and mobilisation commitments of reservists, or by employing Cadet Force adult volunteers, veterans or military spouses, each of our award winners has shown they are committed to supporting the Armed Forces Community. The award event was a success with many of our attendees welcoming the opportunity to network with other regional employers who have similar policies and support procedures to themselves.”

11 organisations in total were awarded at the event from around the East Midlands.
