Nottinghamshire Coach Firm Is En Route To Success With New Depot Opening

A family-run coach hire firm has opened its second depot in the Nottinghamshire village where it was founded more than 25 years ago following a deal overseen by Richard Watkinson & Partners.

John Marshall set up the Sutton-on-Trent based Marshalls Coaches in 1989 with just one second hand coach operating a day a week and has since grown the business to one with 40 employees and a fleet of more than 30 buses and coaches.

For the last eight years, the firm’s service bus division has been run out of a depot in North Muskham with its coaches and offices based in Sutton-on-Trent, but John was keen to relocate the bus depot to premises within the village.

He said:

“Unusually for a business like ours, our coaches and buses are run from separate depots but we really wanted the entire operation to be located within the village, bringing everything that bit closer together.

“We have known Richard Watkinson and his family for more than 40 years, so we asked them to look into finding new premises for us and were delighted that they identified Poplar Farm for us.

“We were very keen to buy premises rather than renting as we had been doing and Poplar Farm fit the bill perfectly.”

Poplar Farm, located in the heart of Sutton-on-Trent, comprises covered accommodation for the firm’s fleet of service buses which operate across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, and will also feature a new modular building that will house the office and provide facilities for staff including a new training room, canteen area and toilets.

Kirsty Keeton, director at Richard Watkinson & Partners, said:

“We have such a long-standing relationship with John and his family so we were really pleased to be able to find such suitable premises within a stone’s throw of its existing operation within Sutton-on-Trent.

“The business has gone from strength to strength since it was established more than 25 years ago and we hope that its new premises with improved facilities in terms of space for training, and so on, will support it for many years to come.”

Richard Watkinson & Partners disposed of the site on behalf of Mercia Garden Products.

Managing director, Terry Waldron said:

“We contacted Richard Watkinson as we were looking to dispose of the site and we were very pleased with just how quickly Kirsty was able to agree a deal with Marshalls Coaches to acquire it.”
