Care Home Residents Have A Ball At Rooftop Beach Party

A group of care home residents celebrated the late arrival of summer by sticking their toes in the sand at their very own beach party, which was held in a rooftop garden.

The event, organised by the Spencer Grove Care Home, part of the Milford Care Group, took place on Friday 22nd July, and saw residents enjoy a true taste of the sea side with a fish and chip lunch served in traditional paper cones.

The inspiration for the beach bash came after the care home took some residents on a trip to Denby Pottery Village last year to visit Pottery Beach, an attraction that creates a sea side resort by providing sand, deckchairs, ice-cream marquees and entertainment features.

However, not all of the 60 residents that reside at Spencer Grove Care Home in Belper were able to attend the trip, which inspired the care home providers to go that extra mile and bring the beach to them instead.

Rebekah Rowell, activities coordinator at Spencer Grove Care Home, said:

“When we went to Pottery Beach last year, the residents all loved it and got really involved, even taking their shoes off to put their feet in the sand. It gave them an opportunity to experience all the fun of the sea side without having to travel so far.

“By bringing the beach to the care home and organising this beach party over the last year, we gave all residents the chance to reminisce about their favourite sea side memories.”

The Care Home also hosted entertainment and games, including limbo competitions which could be played from the wheelchair, a sand pit, ice cream trays and summer music.

Dolly Stanton, also an activities coordinator at Spencer Grove Care Home, helped to further the beach theme by creating some cornhole boards of varying heights, allowing all residents to pose for fun-themed photos, including those in wheelchairs.

The party brought back happy memories for the residents of times they have spent by the sea side with friends, family and loved ones.

The summer music was be provided by Kevin and Marie, a local father and daughter singing act, who will be donning bright costumes to embrace the summer theme.

Rebekah added:

“We’ve been planning for this since the start of the year. We wanted our residents to feel like they’ve had a day at the sea side. We also want to show everyone that living in a care home can be fun and our residents continue to live happy and fulfilling lives”
