Miller Homes Gives Derby Pupils a Safety Lesson

Pupils at a Derby primary school have been learning about safety on building sites as part of an initiative by Miller Homes.

Gary Kuzmicz, centre, with pupils from Ravensdale Junior School.

During New Homes Week (16th – 22nd May), the award-winning house-builder visited Ravensdale Junior School, which is close to its Langley Country Park development.

Children met with health, safety and environmental manager Gary Kuzmicz who delivered an interactive assembly on how new homes are constructed, the future of house building and the dangers they may encounter around building sites. They learned about the importance of staying away from vehicles such as forklift trucks and understanding what warning signs mean.

Gary said: “New Homes Week is a good opportunity for us to work with the local schools and give them an insight into how modern houses are built.

“Health and safety is an important aspect of this so we wanted to ensure that children living close to our developments are aware of the hazards. Youngsters are naturally curious about building sites, particularly when they see the trucks and diggers, but it is important to remember that they are not playgrounds and that they should stay away.

“I hope the pupils at Ravensdale Junior School found the talk both fun and informative. Forging links with the community is important to Miller Homes and we’re looking forward to doing similar events across Derbyshire.”

Head teacher Zoe Cannon said that the pupils had learned important lessons around safety:

“The presentation was extremely relevant to the pupils and they really enjoyed trying on the hard hats and high-visibility jackets. We would like to thank Gary for sharing his advice with everyone at the school.”

Organised by the Home Builders Federation, New Homes Week highlights the advantages of buying a new home. These include the fact that they are often more energy-efficient and give residents the chance to be part of a new community.

Miller Homes has developments throughout Derbyshire, including Langley Country Park on Radbourne Lane. Following the recent launch of the second phase of development, house hunters can now choose from 72 two, three, four and five-bedroom properties. New homes are also available at the newly-launched Oaklands Park in Ashbourne, Dales View in Brailsford, Highfields at Littleover and Somersgate in Repton.
