Over the past 12 months, the city-centre site has continued with its efforts to become Nottingham’s most environmentally friendly leisure venue and would like other city venues do the same ahead of World Environment Day on Sunday 5 June.

In addition to the venue’s ongoing work in maintaining its beehives, flower beds and vegetable patches on the third floor of the drum, The Cornerhouse has announced a number of new environmental initiatives – designed to reduce the site’s carbon footprint and waste.

As part of these efforts, 110 jars of honey have been sold, with proceeds raised going to Mencap, along with a range of fresh vegetables donated to local support centre Emmanuel House.

The new measures includes a new waste management protocol, which now means that 72 per cent of the waste collected by The Cornerhouse’s 20 venues is now fully recycled, with 100 per cent of it diverted from landfill.

Suzanne Green, centre manager at The Cornerhouse, explains:

“Ensuring all of our venues across The Cornerhouse are as environmentally sustainable as possible has been high on our agenda for a number of years and we are very proud to be able to say that all of our waste is now diverted from landfill.

“I’d personally like to thank the management teams and staff at all of our venues for their co-ordinated efforts in maximising their recycling.

“We are also in the process of installing environmentally friendly LED lighting across all of our venues, which will also result in significant reductions in wasted energy and monetary costs for tenants.”

More recently, The Cornerhouse has also announced a new partnership with the Nottingham tram to offer discounted travel to Cornerhouse cardholders after 5pm, Monday to Thursday in an attempt to reduce journeys to the complex by car.

Suzanne, concludes:

“I think it’s particularly important that the rest of the city’s businesses’ get up to speed with recycling opportunities available. We all have a responsibility to instil environmentally friendly practises when possible and further enhance Nottingham’s reputation as a green city.”
