Derby Entrepreneur Helps College Students To Engineer Their Future

A Derby based M&E entrepreneur is inspiring the next generation of engineers by volunteering to teach a class at Derby College as part of the National Citizen Service.

Simon Colton, owner of Colt Engineering based on The Wyvern, visited the college’s campus onSeptember 18 and led two classes of 16-17 year old engineering students.

Fuelled by the support he has for the National Citizen Service, a voluntary personal and social development programme for 16-17-year olds, Simon felt that he could help prospective engineers to have the best possible starts to their careers.

Last year Simon’s daughter took part in the programme, which focuses on skills like leadership, teamwork and communication, so when the Head of Inclusion at Derby College, Sarah Le-Good asked for his help, he was more than happy to offer his expertise.

Sarah Le-Good said:

“Simon was a contact of our Business Development Director as he has done work with the College before and we knew that he had an interest in the National Citizen Service as his daughter took part in the scheme last year."

“It was very kind of Simon to offer to take the two groups of students and teach them about what makes an ideal engineer.  Part of Simon’s success in business is down to his honesty. He really demonstrated to the students how hard work and being honest is vitally important.”

Derby College and the National Citizen Service helps 2000 young people a year to gain transferable skills in a variety of industries and offers them a fantastic opportunity to boost their employability.

Simon Colton said:

“It was a fantastic experience being in a class with a group of prospective engineers, they all had such great enthusiasm and ideas. The National Citizen Service is a fantastic programme for young people who want to develop new skills and to boost their employability."

“I can only hope that sharing my experiences can either inspire or help the students in wherever their careers make take them.”
