Engineering company turned green with new solar panels

A Chesterfield engineering company based on Sheffield City Region’s Markham Vale, has been turned completely green thanks to a solar panel installation.

As well as reducing the energy costs to zero and making the business completely self-sufficient, the solar panel installation at MSE Hiller, based on Markham Vale, will save the company around £34k per year.

The company’s purpose built HQ at Chesterfield’s Markham Vale Business Park is leading the way in energy efficient building design, boasting low energy lighting, efficient heating systems and the recovery of heat and water.

Huw Thomas, Director of MSE Hiller explained:

“When designing the building, Government policy compelled us to meet certain energy saving standards, and this has actually worked in our favour by reducing our annual energy costs substantially.”

The recent solar panel installation is being hailed as a true partnership between Chesterfield Champions, MSE Hiller and Custom Solar Ltd, who are both active members of the town’s marketing campaign Destination Chesterfield.

Huw Thomas, Director of MSE Hiller and Matt Brailsford, Director of Custom Solar.

Matt Brailsford, Director of renewable energy company, Custom Solar Ltd, which completed the installation at MSE Hiller, said:

“We’re on a campaign to turn the region green. Solar powered technology has long been established in Australia and it is just common sense to use renewable energy here to reinvigorate growth in Chesterfield.”

Renewable energy sources like photo voltaic (PV) systems are ideal for any business with their own premises. It doesn’t matter what size the building is all businesses can benefit from investing in PV systems as the like-for-like percentage of income and savings is relative to the investment.

Custom Solar has also recently installed PV systems at Shorts Accountants based in Sheffield and Chesterfield which will bring a profit of over £75k over 25 years.

Based at a £3million purpose-built facility on Markham Vale, MSE Hiller, supplies and rents centrifuges and environmental engineering products to the water, food and other industries throughout the UK.

Chesterfield’s Markham Vale, Derbyshire’s 85 hectare flagship business park, is championing sustainability and transforming an old colliery area into a business and industrial park offering thousands of new jobs. Its flagship business centre, The Environment Centre, is fully sustainable and environmentally friendly with a roof mounted wind turbine to generate electricity, solar panels and a 'grey' water recycling facility, to filter rain water from the roof. Short rotation willow is being grown on the site to provide wood fuel for the centre's wood fired heating boiler.
