City has Designs on Showcase of Architectural Talent

Nottingham's architectural talent will come under the spotlight next week – with a showcase of building design and conceptual work.
The Nott: Just a City exhibition will be held from 7 to 19 April at the former Dwell unit in Fletcher Gate. There will be architectural firms from the city exhibiting both built and conceptual work - alongside students from the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University.
There will be a host of free events for people to go along to – including design panel review sessions, interactive workshops and evening lectures. There will also be a talk given by Chris Watson of Witherford Watson Mann Architects, last year’s winner of the prestigious Stirling Prize.
The event has been organised by the Nottingham and Derby Society of Architects (NDSA) and supported by RIBA East Midlands.
Regional director for RIBA East Midlands Mike Baulcombe said: “Nott: Just a City is a great example of the superb projects being delivered by RIBA branches all over the country with the support of funding from the Institute.
“The Nottingham and Derby Branch is one of the most proactive in the country and it’s a credit to its members that this exhibition, along with associated activities profiling the work of architects and architecture students in the city, has been organised so well. I’m sure it will be a great success.”
Elliott Wood, consulting structural and civil engineers, has joined UK brick manufacturer Ibstock as core sponsors of the event and will run workshops to test visitors’ engineering know-how and highlight industry relationships. Nottingham developer Bildurn has provided the retail unit.

“We are glad to be part of this event which celebrates local architecture of both professional and student work. The aim is to encourage discussions around the built environment and show the benefits of good design and interesting spaces for all."
Architects from local practices will be among those offering critiques and tutorials for students invited to speak with practising architects for industry insight and advice on career progression in and around Nottingham.
A public consultation was held last year in conjunction with Nottingham City Council for an international competition to redesign public space in Trinity Square, highlighting the importance of nurturing local talent in the field.
Other local firms involved are Instaprint, which has provided discounted display board, Fast Graphics which has provided window graphics, and DHP and the Rescue Rooms which is providing refreshments and hosting an after party.
