Using social media to promote the town and its stores

Facebook and Twitter have become powerful marketing tools for both Destination Chesterfield, the towns’ marketing campaign, and the many independent retailers in Chesterfield, who are using them to reach out to people outside the locality and make them aware of everything that the town has to offer.

Laura Jo Owens, Managing Director of Adorn in The Shambles, is a prolific user of social media to raise awareness of her jewellery shop. She said: “Due to our quaint location in The Shambles at the heart of Chesterfield we find ourselves discussed as a 'hidden gem' making us a popular choice with tourists who discover us whilst out shopping.”

Laura Jo added: “Using social media we have become a destination boutique for tourists from other areas such as Belper, Derby and further afield to Scotland, America, Australia and Canada.  We ensure we keep a rapport with our customers by chatting to them via email, Twitter and Facebook to keep them updated on new collections arriving at Adorn.

“At Adorn we ensure we reinforce the Chesterfield name wherever possible, when out visiting, on holiday or using the #chesterfield on Twitter.  The central location, local history and friendly people made our decision to open Adorn in Chesterfield an easy one and we have been overwhelmed by the amount of support we have been given by our lovely customers.”

Earlier this year, on Thursday 21st March, Chesterfield was one of 157 towns, cities and villages that took part in the national Twitter campaign Retweet for Towns Day. The aim of the day was to get people talking-up their town on Twitter and telling the world what’s great about it. Chesterfield businesses, residents and visitors embraced the initiative and helped make Chesterfield the most talked about destination on Twitter that day.

People took to Twitter in their droves to highlight everything that the town has going for, highlighting the wealth of independent retailers, hidden gems, eateries, the  market and Chesterfield’s friendly people.

Independent research recently revealed that there is a growing awareness of the variety of shopping available in Chesterfield by people from outside the area. In fact 35% of visitors to the town are from outside the Derbyshire and South Yorkshire regions.
